Board Update
As we shared in the extra edition of the newsletter earlier this week, the Board of Directors reached a settlement with our side’s plaintiffs in the suit to get people we elected in a special meeting last September when we were all still Associate Members of KDHX. Courtney Dowdall and Kip Loui will be seated on the Board. This has not been acknowledged as of yet on the KDHX website, which is interesting considering somebody did change the part on the website just above the membership list.
Until a few days ago, there was a Board meeting scheduled for Sept. 16, but now that’s been shifted to Oct. 28. A meeting scheduled for November was cancelled altogether. In an obvious time of crisis for the station, one can only question why the Board of Directors, which should be invigorated by two very strong new additions, is going to spend so little time together for the rest of the year.
Meanwhile, the station will be holding its Fall fund drive on air from Sept. 9 through 15.
We Love to See Letters to the Editor
On Wednesday, Aug. 28, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published another letter to the editor concerning KDHX. Derek Burton asks some good questions, though he wrote before the station announced its upcoming fund drive. But we can’t argue with these: “If the reports of unpaid staff are true, why has no turnover been reported? If cash is needed, why resist a request to release documents as required by Missouri non-profit law and instead open another legal fight?”
RIP Bob Putnam
We were saddened to learn that long-time KDHX volunteer Bob Putnam passed away earlier this week. You may remember his appearances as Barroom Bob back in the late 90s and early 00s. He was also involved in many other ways. But KDHX was just one of the cultural highlights of Bob’s life. After a few years running the much-missed 20th Century Books and Ephemera store on Delmar, Bob Putnam and his wife Sherri Danger opened up the Way Out Club, first on Cherokee Street and then on Jefferson Avenue. The nightclub was the epicenter of a certain part of the local music scene for a couple decades, and though it’s been closed for a few years now, many people have shared on Facebook and Instagram their memories of Bob and the Way Out. He made things happen in this town for a long time.
Love of Labor Festival this Monday
This is going to be a great event Monday from noon to 6 pm at Big Daddy’s, 1000 Sidney Street in Soulard. It’s produced by Dogtown Records with the LOVE of KDHX serving as a partnership. From Friday night until Sunday, the same spot will be the home of the Roots & Blues Festival. We’re piggy-backing on the location to celebrate the intersection of labor and music and those of us who provided so much work to make KDHX what it was.
