We Had to Send Another Press Release
First, let’s cover the latest ways in which KDHX management and its Board President are avoiding reality. We sent this press release to all the news media, and posted it on social media, but here it is again for those who haven’t seen it. Feel free to share it far and wide.
KDHX, the nonprofit community radio station broadcasting at 88.1 FM in St. Louis, recently announced the appointment of four new board members.
The appointments included the formal recognition of two Board Members after the recent settlement of a lawsuit as well as the appointment of two volunteer DJs. This comes after a long period in which the Board of Directors disallowed DJs and other volunteers to serve as directors.
As of August 23, 2024, the board has two more new directors: Courtney Dowdall and Kip Loui. These two directors were only seated after a lengthy legal action, which resulted in KDHX being forced to recognize their election last September. KDHX still lists Franc Flotron and Ray Finney (the board’s treasurer) as directors although the court settlement recognized their removal.
While now official directors, Dowdall and Loui are eager to address the current crisis even as scheduled board meetings have been postponed or canceled. Loui and Dowdall have not been consulted on any other new directors nor allowed to vote on any appointments. The next Board meeting is scheduled for October 28.
In addition to Dowdall and Loui, the station has announced the appointment of two new Board Members – Ron "G. Wiz" Butts and Tamika "Lady Jock" Harvey – who currently serve as on-air DJs.
This is a reversal of a long-questioned station policy that prohibited active DJs and other volunteers from serving in director positions. This policy was never written into the station’s bylaws but was implemented as “board member expectations” (without the consent of volunteers) by Executive Director Kelly Wells.
In the media release announcing the new Board Members, Vice President Paul Dever began by saying, “Volunteer voices are important at KDHX.” This statement by the longtime Board Members is inconsistent with KDHX management’s widely reported actions over the past sixteen months.
In May 2023, the Board’s response to a statement of no confidence in Executive Director Wells (signed by dozens of volunteers) was to ignore those concerns. Instead, the management fired ten of the DJs who had organized around the statement leading to a mass exodus of dozens of more DJs who went on strike. Currently, KDHX remains in crisis due to the failure to address many of those points raised in the original statement of no confidence.
Meanwhile, KDHX faces another lawsuit to ensure that access to information about its legal records is available to the members of the station. The legal action seeks to force station management to abide by Missouri’s legal requirements as a nonprofit corporation to provide access of its records to its members. The suit was brought by volunteer Associate Member Anne Silverstein. However, the legal summons to KDHX registered agent (Executive Director Kelly Wells) to appear before the court and answer this latest petition remains unanswered. For over a month, a court-appointed process server has attempted to serve both Kelly Wells and Board President Gary Pierson to no avail.
The refusal follows a pattern where the troubled station’s leadership has withdrawn from the community as reflected in its refusal to address the community during board meetings, its diminished social media accounts, and hundreds of ignored letters to the station.
LOVE of KDHX asks the Board to address the community’s concerns. Heal the divisions that have been sown. Work with all directors as equals. Undo the damage of this past year of conflict and strife.
SoSTL Fest Is Tomorrow
The Second Annual SoSTL Music and Arts Festival presented by the Gyres Society will be held tomorrow, September 21, at the Spine Indie Bookstore & Cafe, 1976 Arsenal in the Benton Park neighborhood, from noon until 9:30 pm. There will be a great line-up of live music, along with craft and arts vendors, and food vendors. Your friends from LOVE of KDHX will be there, too, holding a raffle and selling merch, as well as just hanging out and meeting all the fans of KDHX as it was and could be again some day.
LOVE of KDHX Victory Spin is next Friday
Friday, Sept. 27, from 4 pm until 1 am, a veritable army of former KDHX DJs will be taking turns spinning music at the Royale, 3132 S. Kingshighway Blvd. The idea is to celebrate the settlement of the first lawsuit which has allowed Courtney Dowdall and Kip Loui to join the KDHX Board of Directors, and to remember the first anniversary of the day KDHX management dismissed ten volunteers without cause, which caused a whole bunch more to walk out in solidarity and which led to the formation of the League of Volunteer Enthusiasts of KDHX. It’s gonna be a blast, and you should definitely try to stop by.
Here’s the line-up as currently scheduled.
4PM-5PM Stacy and Hound Dog Brown
5PM-6PM Mark "Sunny Boy" Mason and Drea Stein
6PM-7PM Jeff Hess and X24
7PM-8PM Tom Ray and Ital K
8PM-9PM Caron House and Rich Reese
9PM-10PM Andy Coco and Ace (the Girl From Space)
10PM-11PM Dr. Jeff and Chris Lawyer
11PM-12AM John Wendland and Roy Kasten
12AM-1AM Al Swacker and bobEE Sweet
Honoring David Davis
David Davis, leader of the bluegrass group David Davis & the Warrior River Boys, passed away due to injuries he sustained in an automobile accident on Sept. 15. His music had been heard often on Walter & Willa’s Bluegrass Breakdown show. Here’s a great live performance recorded at the old KDHX studio on Magnolia.
